De La Salle football coach tests positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated

De La Salle football coach Justin Alumbaugh, who has been fully vaccinated since February, will not be on the sideline Friday night after testing positive for COVID-19.

Alumbaugh said Wednesday evening that he is asymptomatic and took the test after learning of a positive case on the team Monday.

“We’re following every state and county guidelines,” Alumbaugh said. “We’ve been in full communication with every team, and we fully intend on fielding a team Friday.”

A number of players will miss the home game against undefeated California because of county COVID-19 protocols, Alumbaugh said.

Defensive coordinator Nate Kenion will be the acting head coach.

Even though he won’t be physically present, Alumbaugh said he plans to communicate with the team from his home office while watching the game on a stream.

“I won’t be physically at the game, but I will be at the game in some way, shape, or form,” Alumbaugh said.

Alumbaugh said his wife and two young children tested negative and he has been quarantining since learning of his positive result.

Alumbaugh said he is cleared to coach next week’s game against San Ramon Valley. The coach was planning to get his booster shot this week.

De La Salle is 4-2 this fall and is coming off of its biggest victory of the season, 31-10 at Folsom last week. Folsom entered the game ranked No. 1 in Northern California.

California is ranked sixth by the Bay Area News Group. De La Salle is ranked third.
